Enclosed is AGenT, a piece of educational software that makes use of a
simulated laboratory to help middle and high school biology students
understand some areas of biochemical genetics.
AGenT is a stand-alone application created in SuperCard. It runs only on a
color-capable Macintosh.
AGenT stands for Automated Genetics Tutor. It was written by Bill Sofer of the
Waksman Institute at Rutgers University and Alan Gerstein of Pharmacia Biotech
Inc. It has been designed to supplement a "module" - a set of laboratory
exercises - entitled "Molecular Aspects of Gene Activity" that was developed
under the auspices of NSF and Merck-sponsored grants to Bill Sofer and George
Pallrand of Rutgers. AGenT is SchoolWare (see the program and Readme file for
more information).

Subject: [*] ApplWindows 2.0.1
ApplWindow is an INIT that makes your Application Menu hierarchic (System 7
required, obviously), showing all open windows of every application. It is
the latest version and was downloaded from AOL.
I got into trouble last time I uploaded a program to the archive when I
commented on the program in relation to another program. So I'm not going
to do that again except to say that ApplWindows is my favorite INIT of its
kind. I've encountered no problem whatsoever (I use 50-60 INITs at a time
on my Mac). It doesn't take up addition space on your menu bar and doesn't
require you to hold down a modifier key to access it (you can disable it
temporarily by holding down the Shift key, though). And best of all, it's
free.

Subject: [*] Checksum 1.0
Here is Checksum for the Macintosh, version 1.0. Checksum is the
ultimate Macintosh application for calculating checksums for a
file. This utility is fully compatible with the Unix(tm) "sum"
program (and the POSIX "cksum" program), and can be used to verify
that files transferred between machines match. It is even smart
enough to translate end-of-line characters between Unix, MS-DOS and
Macintosh 'TEXT' files. Checksum is the easiest way to compare
files on the Macintosh, either on the same system or on different
machines.
Fully System 7 and 32-bit addressing compatible, including balloon
help and "drag and drop" capability. It will run under either
System 6 or System 7 on a Mac Plus or higher.
Checksum is business-ware: it is freeware for personal use on a
single CPU and for educational institutions for instructional uses,
but it is shareware ($5) for use in a business, corporation,
organization or government.

Subject: [*] DiskDup+ 2.11
This is DiskDup+ version 2.11, the floppy duplicating program
ba Roger Bates. Please note that I am only uploading this,
I am NOT the author. Binhexed Compact Pro archive. Enjoy!
Here is a list of the principal features of DiskDup+:
- Performs sector duplication of either 400K, 800K, or
1440K floppies.
- You can copy 800K Masters onto 1440K copies (with
increased free space)
- Disk images may be Read/Written from a hard drive.
- Disk images may be mounted from the Finder for direct
access to the file contents. You may also cuplicate or
mount file images for Apple's DiskCopy program.
- Formats copies as single or double sided as necessary to
match the master disk.
- Optionally performs a complete read back of the copy to
verify all data against the original in order to assure full
data integrity.
- Requires only a single floppy disk drive (either
internal or external). If you have two drives, you may
alternate between them for maximum efficiency.
- A new master may be read in at any time without
exiting the program.
- A Copy counter displays the number of duplications completed.
- The entire disk data is held within the Mac if it has
sufficient memory. With less memory, two passes may be
required to complete the operation.
- An optional warning tells you if you are about to write
onto a formatted disk.
- Master disk is never mounted, so viruses can never
propogate ONTO the master (and its copies) during the
duplication process.
- Duplicates Macintosh MFS, Macintosh HFS, Apple A/UX,
and any other readable diskette.
- Tolerates bad sectors if they do not involve actual
disk data.
- Controls for easy use with "Jukebox Five" automatic
disk feeder.

Subject: [*] Galaxis1.2.hqx
Galaxis Short Description
=========================
"Galaxis is a good cross of Battleships and Mines". Well, that's what a user
said. I don't really know if I can agree on that statement, but since I'm
only the author, I digress...:-)
Version 1.2 is primarily a bugfix release and should now run on SE and
powerbooks. Other changes to the last released 1.1 version are listed in
the Version History, below.
Galaxis is a game of strategy and some luck. You try to find four lost
capsules
in as few turns as possible. In a turn, you try to figure out the best
position
to send a probe to and analyse the data returned. If you use a good strategy,
this data may help you locating the capsules or the next position to send a
probe to.
Galaxis supports continuous stereo background music, comes in two versions
(B/W
and grayscale). The b/w version runs on any Mac, the gray versionon a Mac LC
or better.
The multiplayer network version will come if enough of you send in their
postcard. It's in alpha stage right now and I will probably make beta in a
fdew month.
Galaxis is distributed under XMas-Ware System: It was a XMas Gift for my
Girlfriend. If you like it, send her a postcard.
Galaxis-Version History
* 1.2 March 8, 1993 (Prefs Edition)
Introduced possibility to set Preferences. I supplied a TMPL resource
for those of you who use ResEdit to play games.
Removed bug when opening Galaxis through double-clicking on the
Galaxis Theme.
Removed an obscure bug that crashed Macs when switching from Stereo
to Mono.
* 1.11 Feb 3, 1993 (Gestalt Edition). Never released to public
b/w version now checks to see if 68020 present for playing music since
the SoundTrecker cannot support the 68000 (yet).
Gray version now checks to see if ColorQD present and exits gracefully
(finally!) if not.
If Mac has stereo capabilities, you now can turn stereo sound on.
b/w version refused to run on SE and Plus (OK, it didn't run on *any*
of those 68000 machines, including the PB 100. This bug
had me stumped for over eleven month until I hunted it down
on an ancient SE running 7.1 with MacsBug since it *did* run in the
development system) for some arcane reason. It didn't run because
for some reason SetStdProc in QD doesn't work with the older Macs.
Forgot to update the vers resource. Now this is done too.
Enabled background processing (for keeping up music) and corrected
the SIZE resource.
Removed OK button from Hall Of Fame since it was superfluous.
When opening Galaxis by doubleclicking on the 'Galaxis Theme' the
program aborted. This is fixed now.
Fixed 'soft volume' bug that turned down background music even if
sound was turned off.
Introduced an (optional) addition visual remaining time dial in
time limited games.
Changed a subtle detail: Low-Score is now only possible if game was
not loaded from disk...
Changed the way the cursor flashed to a regular interval.

Subject: [*] Mandella 8.6 -- fractal graphics program
Mandella is a wonderful graphics program for color Macs. It draws
a wide array of different fractal images. This file contains Mandella
8.6, a 45-page MS-Word manual, and 31 sample files. Mandella is loaded
with features including: multiple Mac style fractal windows, seven special
purpose windows, 69 fractal types, ten draw styles, eight transforms
(including 3D), four ways to automate drawing, a palette editor, etc.
The number of fractal windows is limited only by memory. Mandella works
on any color Mac with System 6 or later. Shareware $40.
Version 8.6 Changes
1) Orbital fractals resume properly.
2) The Mouse window now works properly with Line by Line.
3) Fixed a memory leak in Interpolate.
4) Worked on ZoomInto:
a) Fractal parameters (like Constant, Lambda, and Bailout) are
preserved.
b) If No Shift is selected the first preset is now zoomed out
by the correct ammount.
5) The random bounding boxes for all the constants used by all the
fractals have been given reasonable dimensions. Quite a few
fractals had empty boxes for Perturb and Lambda.

Thanks to the folks who replied to my question regarding 21MB flopticals,

not a dinosaur but is only now gaining steam and is starting to be accepted

Subject: 32-bit enabler solution
32-bit enabler solution
After much ado, I have, with the help of the ever-so-
cooperative Lisa Dronzek of Connectix Corp, apparently
solved some of the 32-bit enabler/Mode-32/Virtual Memory
problems.
While it is true that there is no new version of Mode32 for
system 7.1, the current version seems to work just fine
for most circumstances, and in most installations. I say most
because the order of events appears to be very important; the
same holds true for the 32-bit enabler.
To move from mode32 *to* the 32-bit enabler, the following
sequence of events appears to be necessary:
1. Select "Disable" from the mode32 control panel; verify that
it is disabled by looking at the memory control panel--if it doesn't
have the 32-bit on/off buttons, you have disabled mode32.
2. Remove mode 32 and place it on the desktop for safe keeping...
you just might need it or want it again after you've seen the
32-bit enabler in action.
3. Remove all non-apple inits/cp/extentions from your system
folder hierarchy...including stuff floating loose in your system
folder proper. It appears that sometimes one or more of these
will interfere with the enabler during the first boot sequence.
4. If you have it, drag the Connectix Enabler_patch extension
into your extensions folder...if you don't have it get it, it's
worth it, and it's free.
5. Now that you have a minimal system folder with just the enabler
and the enabler patch as extras, reboot. You'll notice a really
strange double boot sequence, and it'll sound like the hard disk
is recovering from a crash. It is, as Connectix engineers have
deduced that the enabler is invoking the same crash recovery
sequence that the system/finder does. Why, I dunno.
6. You *should* get the desktop and finder eventually. Part of
the problem lead to the finder never loading and the mac going
into a vegetative state. Now that you've got the finder,
pop into the control panel and check out the memory panel.
You should see the 32 bit on/off button. Set it to 32 bit "on"
and reboot.
7. You *should* once again eventually get to the finder after
the reboot; again check out the memory control panel and
verify that 32-bit is "on". NOTE: if you own Connectix's
Virtual 3.0, install it now while in a valid 32-bit mode. I
highly recommend this utility...i'm just a satisfied customer.
If you do use Connectix's Virtual, make sure you disable
Virtual memory from Apple's memory control panel...you
don't want 2 different virtual memory schemes at work here.
8. Reboot, verify that everything is in order, and begin to
drag your control panels/inits back into their proper places.
BEWARE, HOWEVER, that the current release of Macsbug,
v 6.2.2, does NOT work properly under 7.1 with enablers
present. Adam Engst, myself, and Connectix have verified
this; Apple does have an 040-LC version available via
ftp, but I haven't tried it (then again, if I had an 040 I
wouldn't be worried about Mode32 or the 32-bit enabler! :)
These steps worked for me last evening; cheers to Connectix
and Lisa Dronzek of their technical support staff for helping
me solve an annoying problem on their dime...even though
the 32-bit enabler isn't theirs.
I have subsequently removed the 3-bit enabler and moved
to Mode32 since I can't stand the annoying double boot & crash
sequence that the enabler causes. Your mileage may vary. The
upshot of all this is that it appears you must install from a
naked system in 24 bit mode, move to 32 bit mode, and replace
your zillions of inits/cp's in order for things to work out
properly.
I sincerely hope that this helps the network community.

Thanks for the steps, George. I'd like it if people who try this and
successfully solve their problems with the 32-bit Enabler would post
their results to the list or send them to me. I'd really like to know
if the problems are all solved by such a clean install process - I'm
not sure I see a heck of a lot of difference between this and pulling
MODE32 out of the System Folder, rebooting with the Shift key down,
installing the Enabler, and then seeing what happens, going through
an INIT conflict test if necessary.
I'm also curious about this double boot & crash sequence George is
seeing. I see a double-boot process with the 32-bit Enabler, but it
doesn't sound or look any different from what I see with MODE32. It
appears that the two things work the same, so perhaps it just doesn't
matter right now which one you use, although I could see that changing
in future systems.
cheers ... -Adam

A simple question, this one. Where is the best place to stick the Apple

I spoke to Abaton Technical Support this morning:
1. The technical representative was totally unambiguous about Everex/Abaton's
decision to jettison InterFax effective immediately.
2. I suspect that this means V1.31 beta of the software will remain so.
(I forgot to ask this explicitly!)
3. The hardware upgrade consists of two chips. The user is responsible for the
installation (presumably Comprehensive instructions are provided?!?!). Once
these replace whatever is there now, the InterFax software will no longer
be able to drive the modem. This replacement will in effect make the
Fax Modem into a group II device. As far as the techrep knew the only group
II software on the market was from STF, and that this would be able to
drive the converted modem. The cost of this upgrade is US$35 or so, plus
handling.
This raises several questions, at least for me:
1. The interFax manual boasted that the InterFax 24/96 was capable of sending
and receiving from all Group III Fax machines.
What is this grouping of Fax machines and modems? and what happens now?
2. I have not paid much attention to the information about the STF drivers:
How good are they? What is the experience to date?
Does the software support voice mail?
I should note in passing that the READ ME document for LineShare by Stalker
Software says in part:
*only Hayes-compatible and Fax Class II modems are emulated in this version*
3. Does this mean that Class II fax machines are *better* than Class III ones
and are compatible with them?
Since there are a number of InterFax users in NetLand, I recommend that all
discussion be posted to the digest.
Cheers.

Subject: An open letter to John Norstad
Dear Mr. Norstad,
There is a virus that has thus far been ignored by the Macintosh community
that
we feel that Disinfectant needs to address. This virus, although
non-destructive, consumes tremendous amounts of disk space. What's even more
alarming is that our research has shown that it is being distributed on the
master disks of almost every major software vendor, include Apple Computer
itself!
The effects of this virus are twofold: First, the aforementioned disk space
problem, due to the fact that a new copy of this 20k virus is created on your
hard drive every time you install software. Second, due to some
incompatibilities, it causes PICT files to not open properly when double
clicked under system 7.x.
Currently, no virus protection package on the market addresses this virus,
known affectionately as "TeachText." Our suggestion is that your next release
of disinfectant include code that would seek out and destroy all copies of
this
offending virus except one, a "blessed" copy that the user can specify,
perhaps
one per volume. The Macintosh community would be forever in your debt,
actually, deeper than we already are.
Thank you for creating the best virus protection product on the market.

In the 5 March edition, kerr@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu (Stan Kerr) voiced his dispise
for PC Exchange. I tried it as well, and found it inadequate, but for other
reasons.
I have two computers, a Powerbook 140 and a T386. I frequently use both, and
transfer files back and forth. I have no problem with conversion of
different types of text files, because I know how to set them up before
transfer. I often transfer stereo sound files recorded with my Soundblaster
Pro, graphic images, and Binhexed files between the two. Also, I can ZIP a
file on my PC, transfer it, and drag it into Stuffit Expander for automatic
expansion.
My problem with PC Exchange is that it is SLOW. For the brief moment in time
that I withstood the torture of using it, I had to wait up to a minute for
the floppy drive while it assigned custom icons to every PC file. Trashing
items was also extremely sluggish. It was awful.
Enter Insignia SolutionUs miracle control panel, Access PC. It is so fast,
itUs virtually transparent to use. No delays, it simply reads DOS formatted
disks as if it were a built-in function of the Mac. Also, at 99K, it is half
the size of PC Exchange. This product has amazed all my friends in college
when I whip out my tiny powerbook and read their DOS disks.
Sorry Stan, it doesnUt do file conversion, but it does assign a creator to
certain extensions. What do you need the translators in AFE for anyway? PM4
reads all file types, as does MS Word 5. I donUt think IUd ever use the
translator functions anyway. Now all I need is Timbuktu for Windows and a
little network, and IUll be in cross-platform heaven.

I got responses from Clare D., Benjamin T., Bryan W., and Ralph N. There
were several recommendations for Default Folder 2.3, which is an updated
version of DefaultD. I've tried it and it seems quite nice, but not
anywhere as functional as Directory Assistance II or Boomerang. Since the
shareware fee for Default Folder is $20, compared to street prices of about
$95 for either Norton Utils or Now Utils, I think I'm going to have to go
with one of them (considering also how much else you get with the other
packages, in addition to the default directory stuff).
There were also some recommendations for Apollo, Shortcut, Open-Wide 3.3,
QuickFolder 0.6, and Dialog View 1.0.2. These gizmos may all be very
handy, but they don't directly address the utility of DAII or Boomerang.

The problem I have is positioning the second copy precisely so that it starts
just below the halfway point on the page.
If all the records were of equal length, I could calculate how much space to
leave after the last line of the first copy and do it that way, but unfort-
unately, the records are variable lengths, so the gap between the two is not
predictable.
I have tried poitioning paragraphs, but I don't want to have to position every
single paragraph in the second copy; if I try to position just the first one,
Word rather disconcertingly moves a following paragraph up above the one I

There must be someway (or kludge) to tell the bl**dy thing to start a

So you hate the MS Mail Chime...well, here's a little help to change that.
(See note below before starting)
1. Run ResEdit.
2. Open the System 7 sound that you desire to be your Mail chime.
3. Dbl-click the sound icon.
4. Select the sound and copy.
5. Open the MS Mail extension.
6. Dbl-click the sound icon.
7. Select paste.
8. Select the old chime and clear.
9. Select the new sound and then get resource info.
10. Edit the ID and name to be the same as the one that you just cleared.
[For me, it was 8192 and "Chime" and is probably the same for you]
(this does seem to be VERY important to keep the same name and ID)
11. Save and close.
12. Open the MS Mail Cache which is from the Preferences folder.
13. Repeat steps 6 thru 11.
14. Replace your old MS Mail extension and Cache with the new ones.
15. Reboot and go.
16. If the sound you hear is the system sound, then you screwed up somewhere.
MS Mail will use the system sound if something is wrong with its sound.
Notes: Normal ResEdit rules apply. Always have a copy of everything. You can't
work on the files in use. I didn't put down every little detail; you should
have some experience before attempting this. I am using MS MAil 3.1.
You may not need to change both the extension and cache, but it didn't work
when I only changed one. I don't really understand their relationship. The
size
of the new sound doesn't seem to matter, but it may bomb if the sound is too
large.
I have seen no effects to the mail server or any other networked part of the
mail system. Try your own method to find the minimum effort and post it.
FYI: The Star Trek beeps sounds are great replacements.
DISCLAIMER: Stop, don't do this. This is Microsoft's product and you shoud not
modify it. I didn't do any of this. I just dreamed how it might work if MS
wanted me to do it.

One thing you might try is setting up the security in NCP Executive settings.
I
recently read an artical on DSNlink that said DECnet will not work with MacX
unless you set up the security. I tried it and it worked like a charm. The
userid and password can be any thing and have nothing to do with logging in to

would often get the sad-mac or "?". I was able to boot with a floppy, but
I usually did not get the HD icon to appear (I say "often" and "usually"
because the responses were not at all consistant). Other changes that
I noticed at the same time I was having these problems was a change in
the appearance of several file icons. MS word icons (I have both 4.0 and
5.0 on the disk) changed from a stack of paper to a single page with the
"W within a diamond" overlapping this single page. Another icon that
changed is that of Glider v3.0.2. It used to be a generic hand-holding-
pen icon to an elegant glider floating over an air vent.
Because I wasn't able to boot, I took my Powerbook to a local Apple
dealer for service. When I picked up the computer yesterday, I was
told that this was a software problem. The service person indicated a
problem with the directory, but the personnel at this store were
unable to explain the problem at all.
My question is then, if this is (was) a directory problem, what could
have caused it and will it happen again? The icons have remained changed

Actually, he's right, if perhaps for the wrong reason. Apple's DiskCopy
DOES qualify as one of the the worst programs ever written (at least for a
Mac). Just ask the people over in the Usenet group
'comp.sys.amiga.emulations'. It's notoriety has earned it a permanant place
in that group's FAQ file. (A dubious distinction at best.)
DiskCopy is one of a very few programs currently known that do not run
reliably on a non-standard mac, like an emulator, or a mac with a non-apple
drive. Not only does it not work, but it isn't capable of telling you in
advance that it doesn't work with your hardware. It's method of telling
that it has failed is to bomb.
It violates Apple's own guidelines by directly accessing hardware that it
assumes exists.

Ok. I guess I have to retract my harsh comment about DiskCopy. For those of
you who missed it, in my reply to somone who was looking for old system
software, I casually mentioned that "DiskCopy is perhaps the worst program
that
has ever been written".
I am sorry. I forgot about DOS. (just kidding)
Seriously, since this has become such an issue, let me explain that my main
objection to DiskCopy is that it requires so much free RAM that people (like
myself) who only have 1 MB of RAM just plain can't use it.
It is true that I also believe that the interface was poorly thought out, but
that wasn't my serious complaint. It was a poor decision on apple's part to
offer archives in a format that 1 MB users can't extract. Nonetheless, it
wouldn't have been hard for DiskCopy to use what memory was available, and do
multiple passes if necessary.
There are lots of reasons to buy extra RAM, but being able to use DiskCopy
shouldn't have to be one of them.
Furthermore, I assume that everyone knows that if you drag a disk icon to
another disk icon, the system automatically makes a new folder on the object
disk, and puts a complete file structure copy of the first disk in that
folder.
What is the benefit of a disk image over this sort of copy?
In other words, why does anyone use DiskCopy at all?

I have just recently purchased a Duo 230 4mb 110hd (waiting for the 8mb

1. I have had several crashes after which upon booting, the system appears
to hang at the "welcome to Macintosh" window for an extremely long period
of time (minutes) before the extensions start to load. Also, this appears
more frequently when the system is docked than when it is not docked.
2. This is the most annoying bug. It has only happened to me when the
system is docked, but occasionally, the entire system goes into slow

are back to normal.
Can anyone explain this?

Subject: DuoDock and color screen > 16"
Dear netters,
I am considering replacing both my PowerBook 170 (a great machine,
just a bit heavy) and my Sun workstation, which I'm far from using at
its full capabilities (I don't have the time to program any more,
alas, only e-mail and text processing), by a PowerBook Duo (for light
weight) and a DuoDock (for comfort and connectivity) with an Ethernet
card and some X-server software to connect to my Unix server (I know
both MacX and eXodus, each is enough to satisfy my needs).
My problem is that I consider essential to have a *big* color screen
attached to the DuoDock when I use it as an X-terminal (my Sun screen
is a 19", 1152*900 8-bit color, and I use *it* at its full
capabilities). In particular, the built-in video which, as far as I
know, is limited to 16", 832*624 screens, is insufficient for me.
The obvious solution is to install a video card such as the Radius 8Xj
(I'm not involved with Radius, only a satisfied user of an *Xj and a
PCD/20 on a IIsi) in a Nu-bus slot and have it drive a 19" or 20"
screen at 1152*870, as it possible on all Mac IIs with Nu-bus slots.
But I have heard that this configuration (Duo + DuoDock + video card +
big screen) does not work.
Can any of you confirm or infirm this rumor, preferably from living
experience? Any relevant information would be appreciated, too.
Please e-mail directly, and I'll post a summary. Many thanks in
advance.

FileGuard 2.7.4 is installed on each individual workstation.
Here's the problem. I want to protect the items on the hard disk from

Trash can. If I unprotect the desktop, users can use the Trash can. I then
protect the individual folders to prevent modification to their contents.
However, doing so does not protect folder names or placement. In other words,
although users cannot modify the contents of the folders, they can modify the

to "freeze" the icons on the hard disk without "freezing" the Trash.

In infomacv11-053 I had posted the question of how to format a third-party
hard
drive with Apple's "Apple HD SC Setup". I received a few responses which told
me
that the problem had been discussed in info-mac before and that I should make
a
copy of "Apple HD SC Setup" and with ResEdit patch the code resource "%A5Init"
where it says "8 SEAGATE", that is change the $38 for ASCII "8" to $00.
This in fact made the utility recognize my removable hard drive, which
proceeded
to format and verify it. It wrote the directory information and then failed to
mount the cartridge. Even SCSIProbe couldn't do anything about that. I guess
the
reason is that there are fundamental differences between removable and non-
removable SCSI hard drives. "Apple HD SC Setup" was never meant to format
removables.
I tried it again on a La Cie external drive with a Quantum LP240S mechanism.
This, I thought, would work then. However, now the formatter didn't get past
the
verification stage.
Maybe this "Apple HD SC Setup"-patch isn't that reliable.

Subject: FTP problem (Q)
Hello netters,
This is my first post, so I hope everything goes well.
If there's anyone out there who finds the following situation familiar,
please let me know, regardless of whether you've found a solution.
At least, I won't feel so alone with this problem.
We have three IIci's and a Quadra attached to ethernet. The IIci's all
have Asante Nubus cards installed, and all four Macs are using Intercon's
TCP/Connect II. The problem is this: the IIci's are unable to put files
through FTP to the Quadra (or to our VAX for that matter), but are able
to get files from any machine without problem. When putting files from
the IIci's, FTP hangs for a long period (during which time the file is
visible on the remote host), then abrubtly stops, after which the file
either has been transferred largely incomplete (usually only a portion
of one line of text!), or disappears altogether from the remote host
directory. When I run FTP from the Quadra or the VAX and try getting
files from the IIci's, I experience the same problem; the files
after a lengthy amount of time just do not transfer completely.
Oddly, the IIci's are able to put and get files amongst themselves
without any problem. And the Quadra (with its built-in ethernet card)
is FTP'ing without problem (except in getting files from the IIci's).
Of course, it would be easier to do file sharing through the Chooser
amongst all of our Macs, but we need FTP to put files to our VAX.
It becomes a bit tedious to first place the files on the Quadra in
order to FTP them to the VAX, which is what I've resorted to.
Tech support at Intercon have not been able to come up with a solution.
The problem may not be in TCP/Connect anyway, as I've tested different
FTP servers on our IIci's, and they all experience the same problem.
Now we've asked for help from Asante, but they've never seen this
problem before, and I am at present anxiously awaiting their response.
Both Intercon and Asante have sent us their latest release of
relevant software, but this has not made a difference. My only
thought now is that we've received faulty Nubus cards.
If anyone has any insight into this, please respond privately, unless
you feel this of general interest. Thanks in advance!

If PowerPoint were using standard system calls to build its font menu,
there wouldn't be any problem! But seriously, Greg's Buttons does some
intense fiddling with the user interface, and certain programs just assume
that the interface will never change. So, they don't bother to check the
font information or color information. If a program follows Apple's
guidelines, it should work fine with Greg's Buttons. From past experience,
Microsoft tends not to follow Apple's guidelines.
To fix the problem, I suggest that you turn off the "Substitute System

other than tell you to restart with extensions off and re-install your
system file. Has anybody had any good experiences with Microsoft?
(Actually, once I got e-mail from some folks at Microsoft who had found
a bug in Greg's Buttons. They disassembled the code and told me what I
should do to fix it. Now that's tech support! Unfortunately they had
disclaimers that said that they do not speak for Microsoft. Too bad.)
First of all, "MTExt" stands for "MathType Extra" -- it is a postscript
font so it does not make any system calls at all. I actually find it
extremely annoying that Microsoft automatically installs this font in
my system file, since I cannot use it in anything but the equation editor.
The "Shared Code" file doesn't load anything at startup (I think, please
correct me or ignore what I'm saying if I'm wrong). It is just a chunk
of code that happens to be used by more than one Microsoft program. So,
they put it in the extensions folder (where it is easy to find) instead
of duplicating it in each of the application packages. Seems a good idea.
As for your problems with Greg's Buttons, I suggest that you
1) Turn off the "Substitute system font" feature
2) Upgrade to version 2.4 of Greg's Buttons
3) Get in touch with me via e-mail, and I'll send you a beta version
of 2.5. My hunch is that it will fix the problem. Version 2.5

Fire up ClarisWorks. File-Open-toggle import options select word processor
and AppleWorks. Insert AppleWorks disk. The files of type pn{ (hope those
odd chars got through) display, but nothing else. Filen. Read and
translate a file, then select save as and save as an AppleWorks file to the
same disk Now try to import it back. Can't. Look up the type. It is
BINA. If I zap the type with a utility back to the funny type from before,
I can see it again in the import box.
Summary: The translator used by Claris Works to save files (called
AppleWorks 2.0 on the menyu) saves files with a different type than the
translator used to read such files (called AppleWorks in the menu) can read.
What in the blazes is going on and what do I do about it? I bought this
machine to allow users to transport ProDOS files back and forth to a Mac.
This apparent screw-up prevents me from doing that because a file allegedly
saved in AppleWorks format cannot be read as such either by Claris Works or
by AppleWorks. Problem works the same way on Mac LCIII, Mac II, and Mac
IIfx
Before you say, use AFE to change the file, keep in mind that a ProDOS disk
mounted by the ProDOS extension appears to the Mac as a Mac disk, not as a
ProDOS disk. AFE does not even see it as a ProDOS disk, and will not offer
translation services as such. Besides, it is ridiculous to have to take
this extra step.
In another post, I indicate that I cannot get the Apple ][e card to display
properly either. Surely someone out there is using this software correctly.
What is the trick?

Hints on preparing an archive for distribution
As the user of an inventory program I usually sort the list of all files
in lexicographic order. But usually the files that belong to one package,
archive or whatever fall apart in this sort order.
To keep them together I suggest this:
Always give the full name at the beginning of each file!
The full name should include the version number of the
program/init/cdev/whatever you are distributing.
Please give every release a version number, no matter whether it's the
first alpha of a silly test version.
This makes it MUCH easier for maintaining files on big media
(read: my hard disk) and allows faster updates. :-)
Please add a version resource (if that's how it's called) so that the info
window can show the version even if it has been deleted from the name.
Hey, it even makes sense for folder listings that show the version numbers !
Furthermore, please cut additonal text files into different parts that
allow a fast way to access the necessary data.
Here are some examples of what structure these may have:
MyProg 1.1.1.cpt MyProg 1.1.1 as CompactPro file
MyProg 1.1.1.sit MyProg 1.1.1 as StuffIt file
MyProg 1.1.1 The application/init/cdev
MyProg 1.1.1 Balloon Ballon help texts
MyProg 1.1.1 Changes Bug report+fixes, new features, ideas
MyProg 1.1.1 Contents List of all files within the archive
MyProg 1.1.1 Docs Detailed information on the use of it all
MyProg 1.1.1 History List of all changes
MyProg 1.1.1 Order Form The order form - ready for printing

MyProg 1.1.1 Intro
MyProg 1.1.1 Manual
MyProg 1.1.1 Release Notes
MyProg 1.1.1 Registration Form
MyProg 1.1.1 User's Guide
Whether it's "Documentation", "Manual" or "User's Guide" -
"Docs" is probably the best as it's the shortest form.
So I suggest using "Docs" to name your document files.
If you can, please provide information that can be read by most editors,
preferrably TeachText, as it is shipped with every Mac.
If you don't want to use TeachText then please use one of those programs
which allow creation of standalone documents.
There are a pretty bunch of them available and I have seen really nice ones.
Some of them even allow saving the text in TeachText format.
Just don't expect everyone to have a copy of Word to view docs of 4K
length...
Plead to archive maintainers:
Please make your hqx files translate into archive file name that
_include_ version number and archive program suffix!
It's a drag to unpack archives just to find out which version it is
or which archiver was used.
Happy archiving!
Sven :)

I beg to differ. If you don't execute the trojan or virus, then it can't
affect your system. You can only be vulnerable to a virus (or trojan) in
the self-extrascting code if you execute it (by double-clicking...). As I
said (an you quoted), using Stuffit Expander bypasses the (supposed) self
extracting code. Therefore, you just have to check the extracted
(unstuffed) files for viruses using Disinfectant or similar, which is a
very good habit to get into anyways.
I think what everyone has to remember is that there are two places for a
virus (or trojan) to hide in a SEA. It could be in the self extracting
code (use Stuffit Expander to bypass), or in the archived files (use
Disinfectant or similar after expanding). The commercial SAM would allow
you to scan the whole thing without expanding, but if I can bypass the
self extracting code, then I only need to scan the files in the archive.
Lets stop beating a dead (trojan) horse. 8-) John A.

Athough I agree it can be a pain, there is a good reason for it.
What if you're running a program in the background that requires 256
colors? The system will have no way of knowing that, thus programmers are
discouraged from changing it behind the user's back. However, better
programs notify you that you're in the wrong color mode and simply say,
"should I switch to xx color mode for you?"

I have a problem on HP Desk Writer printing. When I use the HP Desk

slow.
The estimated average printing speed is about 5-6 min/page. Undoubtedly, this
printing speed makes my thesis printing (about 150 pages) an awful job. I
find
that the printer driver (DW 3.1) spends much time on "spooling to disk"

I don't know why this process takes such a long time. Is this problem caused
by
the slow CPU speed of my LC II (with FPU emulator)? Is it useful if I use a

BTW, a friend of mine wants to connect the HP Desk Writer (for Macintosh) to a

Subject: LC III VRAM & bit depth (correction)
Dear colleagues:
I apologize for my recent blunder: The LC III does never
support "Millions" of colors, but rather "Thousands", depending
on VRAM and monitor resolution:
Monitor resolution pixel depth # of colors VRAM [KB]
12" 512x384 1-16 2-thousands standard 512
13/14"&VGA 640x480 1-8 2-256 standard 512
" " 1-16 2-thousands 768
Portrait 640x870 1-8 2-256 standard 512
16" 832x624 1-8 2-256 standard 512.
Thus, the 16" monitor is supported without the need to install an
additional VRAM module. Additional VRAM is effective only in the
640x480 resolutions, where it gives the "Thousands of colors" option.
This is supposedly the best setting for QuickTime movies.
Greetings, Michael.

The actual amount of VRAM that the LCIII can be expanded to is 768k.
This is enough to give "Thousands" of colors on monitors up to 640x480
but does not add anything to the 256 colors already possible on larger
monitors up to 832x624 with the base 512k VRAM.

Thanks to all those that responded to my question (too many to list).
The concensus seems to be that the improved speed etc. of the LCIII make
it too good to pass up, even though the LCII is now much cheaper than before,
but not that much cheaper than an LCIII. Also the LCIII comes with 512k of
VRAM which supports 256 colors on a 14" monitor. It is upgradable to 768k of
VRAM (32,768 colors).
As far as software, the Claris works is consistently recommended over
Microsoft works. MYM and Quicken receive about equal support, with Quicken
being easier to learn but MYM providing more functions. Thanks to everyone,
you've been a big help.

Subject: Mouse/Caps lock problem?
This problem has been happening to me recurrently, about once a week,
with no consistent cause that I have been able to trace. Like all
intermittent problems, it's a bear to track down because it's not
reproducible on demand.
If I'm in Word, suddenly the insertion point refuses to budge. It's
as if the mouse button were being held down. Clicking to the left
or right of the insertion point produces a selection between where
the parked insertion point is and where I have clicked. No matter
where I click the cursor, the insertion point refuses to move. I use
a Microspeed Trackball, so at first I thought maybe somehow the click
lock was getting stuck, but no amount of pushing on the three keys of
the trackball has any effect.
A second, related problem is that occasionally as I type all letters
begin to appear in CAPS, as if the caps lock key were down, but it's
not. And no amount of clicking on the caps or caps lock key changes
anything.
Both of these problems disappear, at least temporarily, if I restart.
Yesterday I was working with both Word 5.0 and FileMaker Pro, and
found to my astonishment that when the ALL CAPS business started in
FMPro and I switched over to Word, I had the stuck insertion point
problem. I have never experienced the stuck insertion point in
FileMaker or any other program: only Word. As usual, rebooting
made both problems go away.
I wonder whether my newly-installed upgrade of QuicKeys is
invoking something screwy, but I can't spot anything. I can
try running for a while without QK, but since the problem is so
intermittent, that won't prove anything. If I have no problems for
two weeks without QK I still won't know whether it was the culprit.
The same applies in spades to init/cdev conflicts. I run a LOT of
them, and shutting them off one by one then waiting a suitable
length of time to see if my problem has disappeared could take
years! Since rebooting always solves the problem, there is no way
to eliminate a suspected baddie when the problem occurs so as to
be able to confirm the suspect.
Anybody ever experienced this sort of bizarrerie and have any
suggestions? I'm using a IIsi with 20 megs of RAM installed,
running 17 of them under Maxima, with System 7.0 and Tuner 1.1.1.
Virtual Memory and 32-bit addressing are off.

I gather MYM 5.0 is a bit different. It doesn't necessarily help you
analyze your stocks and bonds, but it does let you set up portfolios,
update prices, calculate values based on employee purchase plan contributions,
and generally include your portfolio in any planning you might want
to do. For instance, if you wanted to buy a house, you'd want to know
how much cash you had on hand for the down payment. MacMoney had no
real way of tracking stocks such that you just had to add that in
separately. In MYM everything is properly deducted out of the paycheck,
and the part that goes into stocks is put in that account, to be converted
into stock every six months. That stock then takes on the value of
the stock shares, and that number (because you can liquidate it) is
then included in your cash forecast.
> What is your opinion of that part of MYM 5.0? I don't have a large
> portfolio but I would like to keep better track of it, and I was
> considering buying Dow Jones's Market Manager Plus 2.03.
I don't think there's any compeition between MYM and something more
sophisticated that will graph stock movements and all that. For what
I wanted - inclusion of stocks in my financial picture (small as that
may be), MYM seems to work fine.
> In general, what made you move leave MacMoney? On the basis
> of the MYM 4.0 demo disk, they seemed quite similar.
The interface drove me nuts after a while - there were some good things,
but on the whole it was very modal and didn't use standard Mac ways
of doing things. MYM is just the opposite - very non-modal, heavily
internally linked (so that reports allow you to get more information
by clicking on a number to see where it comes from).
Also, MacMoney doesn't do any tax estimation, and things tend not
to import it as well since it's less known. Also, I think they've
been needing an update for several years now, and it's been promised
with no delivery as yet. Survivor Software is small, and MacMoney
works fine under System 7, but I'd still like some new features every
now and then.
> I am sorry to bother you with these questions, but they don't get

I'll be writing somethng short about MYM, Best Books, and MYOB in
TidBITS soon. Part of the reason why financial stuff doesn't get much
airtime is that it's hard to write about for non-experts, me included.
I can only say what I liked and disliked - I don't know how that compares
to the way it _should_ be done or anything like that. It seems to
do the job for me - I was duplicating effort in MacMoney for the first
month of the switchover; I stopped that because MYM told me just as
much and more.
At $8.50 for a test drive of the real program, it's hard to go wrong.
(If they still have that program - it's not expensive even normally.)

another Expert Astronomer feature, the ability to predict solar and lunar

showing the path of total and annular solar eclipses. Eclipse calculations
are dreadfully slow if you don't have a math coprocessor, but they breeze
by if you do.
I did encounter one bug in Planet, but it's easily circumnavigated. Planet
allows you to add locations to its Location menu. I tried to enter my home

We use PacerShare which is on one of our ULTRIX boxes (DEC UNIX). This lets
us mount
Unix volumes on a Mac and printer queues can be setup on the Unix box that are
visable
to Mac's via the Chooser. It works rather well, it's alittle slow but it's
more
dependable than the queues we have set up in Pathworks.
PacerShare might be from DEC but I'm not positive.

The real problem is: what happens when you run two applications simultaneously
which require (and bluntly set) different screen depths? This is the IMHO
reason
Apple first stated "don't set the screen depth from your program" which later
got relaxed to "don't set the screen depth from your program without asking

SE/30. I don't need a printer (I'm stuck with an Imagewriter LQ /no
flames/).
Since I'm a student, I think I get the 'student' discounts through the
University. Now here's the bottom line. Can I get a system like this for
well under $3000? Or am I asking too much? I have a 2-and-1/2-year-old son
andwould like the color monitor to use for educational software, games, etc...
I don't think I need any video or big screen (14" or 15" is enough). Please
mail me soon! I don't read this group very often. Sorry if this is a FAQ.
Thanks,
ed

I've seen this too, but at some point I reordered it with Conflict
Catcher and the problem went away, even though I subsequently put
the order back. It was a very weird intermittent problem and I couldn't
track it down even with Conflict Catcher because of the intermittency.

So I made an alias.

So I looked at the info window of the alias.
And the info window showed that the old path of the original.
How do I enforce an update ?
This sounds like basic stuff. Should I RTFM ?

Subject: Why not just buy it and not write a thesis (A)
Awhile back in infomac digest #30 this year, I sent a passionate plea to
the hackers of the world for inspiration. Many gave me positive feedback.
I sent them personal thanks.
Now, in bumping around the internet after initial inquiry to people at
Wolfram, I found out the answer. The precursor to the ordinary differential
equation system solver, NDSolve, where you just write each equation into an
argument slot of NDSolve, was called DSolve in 1989 and was rather buggy.
Version 2.1 mathematica has the source code for it. But, the real punchline to
the gag was it was a thesis by Victor S. Adamchik , 1987 !!!!!!!!
Well, I guess I'll just go back to my alternate universes and fool around
with getting "Partial Differential Equations with Mathematica", by
Dimitri Vvedensky, 1992 Addison-Wesley so I could get into superposition.
But, I shall be severely tempted away from programming by Gell-mann and
Hartle's paper dealing with alternate histories, zounds graduate school is
fun!
So, alas poor hyperspace and internet hackers, no immediate object
oriented
alternate universe navigators (called minisuperspace in the sumex archives)
are probably immediately forthcoming. Code developement time of days rather
than months not withstanding, I got to understand what it is I am going to do
first and today I am merely exhilirated to find the answer:
Victor S. Adamchik didn't ask the dumb question, he sold his thesis!

Not as useless as you think. Someone who is running on a memory-
constrained system can open the small Graph application much more
easily than having Word and Excel open at the same time. It's also
much faster than launching Excel, and not every person who owns Word
also owns Excel (or "something real").
Something of an anti-MS diatribe....

I seem to remember seeing a reference to a utility that will wrap
startup icons to multiple rows if there are too many to fit on one
line. Does such a beast exist? If so, what is it and where can I
find it?
Thank you.

Subject: WriteNow sold to Wordstar
I just read a press release on AOL's T/Maker forum that T/Maker's
word processor WriteNow has been sold to Wordstar, which is apparently
Wordstar's first entry into the Mac market (I think?).
The WriteNow development team will continue to do work on the program,
and have joined Wordstar (though they will apparently stay in their
offices at T/Maker...don't ask me!).
As of March 15, Wordstar will be responsible for customer service, etc.
I suppose calling T/Maker will get you the correct phone number.
As a very satisfied WriteNow user, I'm not sure how to take this. I
suppose Wordstar has substantially more backing for development, but
we'll see what happens...
